As your entourage expands by sexual replication, more and more little minds will be about, and soon they will need more stimulation than just “Look! Doggie!”. How about some classic Pooh stories, and then you can show them bees, and woods, and Bambie’s… oh the fun you’ll have, and the minds you’ll mold!

These brightly coloured high-density foam blocks are lots of fun, and “the foam is both lightweight and soft enough to ensure no ill effects if bounced off walls, furniture or even a sibling greyhound”. My own nephew has tested these extensively, albeit with cats, and he continues to be the apple of his grandmother’s eye.

A company called Uncle Goose has produced a wide variety of painted wooden blocks “for the enlightenment of others” – not just English characters, but Chinese, German (umlauts!) and even Egyptian Hieroglyphs!
